Rural poverty hinders food security in the mountainous southern Kyrgyz highlands. This study focuses on the economic, environmental, and social determinants of household food security in one rural Kyrgyz community. A mixed-method approach sociologically examines regional trends, interhousehold characteristics, and intrahousehold dynamics of food security. Survey data observes kinship, labor, and food sharing networks during the high (summer) and low (winter) point of food security. Interviews and field notation provides a depth of analysis and compelling narrative.
The research makes a significant contribution to rural and agricultural development scholarship focusing on Central Asia, semi-nomadic societies, and high-elevation communities.
