Destiny posing in a traditional korean dressThis past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Seoul, South Korea, through the Yonsei International Summer School program. I was sponsored by the Big Ten Academic Alliance and the Korea Foundation through the NAM Center at the University of Michigan, and I could not be more grateful for their support in making this experience possible.

During my time at Yonsei, I focused my research on potential policy addendums to address South Korea’s ongoing ER admissions and “ping-pong” crisis. I had the privilege of presenting my findings at the Yonsei International Research Symposium, where my work was awarded first place.

Alongside my research, I also took courses in traditional East Asian philosophy, Korean literature, and family psychology, each offering new perspectives that deepened my understanding of culture, values, and health systems in Korea.

Beyond the classroom, my experience was just as transformative. I met incredible people—from artists and physicians to fellow students and professors—who expanded my worldview and became lasting friends. I practiced my Korean language skills, explored Korean traditions by trying on hanbok, traveled to Suwon and Busan, and even attended a music festival. Of course, I also immersed myself in the food culture, from adventurous dishes like raw live octopus to the comfort of Korean barbecue.

Studying abroad showed me the value of stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging with new perspectives. I wholeheartedly encourage every student to seek out an education abroad opportunity through MSU and the Big Ten Academic Alliance, you never know how profoundly it may shape your future!

This experience not only strengthened my academic passions in global health literacy and international medical education but also enriched my cultural awareness and personal growth. It was truly one of the most meaningful summers of my life.
